Transparency

What moderation on nextup looked like each month, counted from its own records.

About these numbers

The EU's Digital Services Act asks online platforms for transparency reports. Micro and small platforms like nextup are exempt (Article 15(2)). We publish the numbers anyway, because you should be able to check how the site is run.

Nobody types these numbers in. They are counted from the moderation records and are never more than 10 minutes old. Months are calendar months in UTC.

You only see counts here: never a person, a video, or what a report said. Each decision, with its date and reason, is on the moderation log. No moderation decision is made automatically: the abuse detectors only raise a flag, and the owner decides what happens next.

Right now nextup is one person's site and the community is closed, so nobody else can post and most of these numbers are zero. They fill in once the community opens.

How we count

  • A report counts in the month it arrived, and its first decision in the month that decision was made. So a report from the last days of one month can be decided in the next. If an appeal later reverses the decision, the report's first decision stays where it was; the reversal counts under appeals and actions, in its own month.
  • Reports are counted under the category the person reporting chose, as illegal or as against the terms.
  • The median time is the middle one: half of the decisions came faster, half slower. It runs from the moment a report arrived to its first decision, or an appeal arrived to its decision.
  • Actions are removals, takings out of the streams, the owner's vetoes from the moderation tools, account suspensions, bans, and reversals. A suspended invite branch counts each account, and so does lifting it again. Granting or withdrawing trusted status and changes to site settings are on the moderation log but not counted here, because they hold nobody back. A change to a member's vote weight is never public, not even as a number.
  • Two kinds of log entry are counted apart, as not moderation: a video in New retired by the owner's down vote, which the published graduation rule treats as a veto, and a retired video the owner sent back to New for a fresh test.
  • What started an action is checked in this order: an appeal, a report, an abuse flag. Anything else was the owner's own decision.
  • Abuse flags count in the month they were opened, with where they stand today. The detectors and their thresholds are on How it works.
  • Small numbers are shown as they are, but no number says who or what it is about. A count of actions repeats what the moderation log already lists one by one. A count of reports or flags names neither the person reporting nor the account or video concerned, and reports and flags still open are counted per month only, never by category or pattern.
